Another local qualifier for Golfers’ Alliance championship

PANMURE Golf Club’s Douglas Mitchell is among the latest qualifiers for the JTC Interiors Express Midland Golfers’ Alliance Championship next month at Arbroath.

Off four, he booked his place with a scratch 75 for a top 10 finish in Thursday’s competition at Crieff Golf Club in Perthshire.

Leading the way in the scratch section was Montrose Links assistant professional Graeme Brown, who topped the prize-list in style with an eagle two at the last for a one-under-par 70.

Amateur order-of-merit leader Chris Westland, Alloa, won the handicap section with a net 67 off eight.

Next week’s competition over the Medal Course, Monifieth, on Tuesday, March 29, is sponsored by W.H. Miller. Tee-times are from 8.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m.

Boy Golfers

THIRTY of the country’s top boy golfers will descend on Arbroath this weekend to compete in a 54-hole curtain-raiser to this season’s Scottish Golf Union Junior Tour.

Launched in 2004, the SGU Junior Tour was introduced to provide leading Scottish boys (under 18 years of age) with additional high quality competitive play.

Another objective was to allow SGU coaching staff and selectors to assess players and their development over a variety of challenging courses.

The tour also provides an appropriate competition structure and added incentive for under-18 players to pursue higher honours.

ANGUS County Golf Association warmed-up for the new season with a friendly fixture against a Panmure Golf Club/Dundee University Select at Barry on Sunday.

Kris Harper, Carnoustie, Gary Duncan, Carnoustie Caledonia, Grant Bowman, Monifieth, and Danny Lawrence, Ballumbie Castle, all featured for the County side, who won the match 6-2.
