After much speculation and rumour-mongering it is now official, Carnoustie has today (Tuesday) been named as the 2018 venue for The Open.
Golf’s governing body the R&A held a press conference at the Greenbrier Classic in West Virginia, USA, this afternoon at 4 p.m. GMT to confirm the choice of Carnoustie for the 2018 competition which will see some of the world’s premier golfers battle it out for the prestigious trophy.
Golfing icon Tom Watson was present at the press conference and helped with the announcement.
It is understood the Greenbrier was chosen as the site for the announcement as it is being used as an Open Championship qualifying event.
Speculation was rife about Carnoustie’s future on the Open circuit after the addition of Royal Portrush to the roster last month, but fears were dispelled by the R&A, although no concrete announcement was made on when Carnoustie would next host the competition.
