Carnoustie HSFP 41,

Kirkcaldy 2nd XV 5

Carnoustie entertained Kirkcaldy 2nd XV on league duty on Saturday in a downpour with a strong wind and on a waterlogged pitch.

FPs kicked off with the visitors dropping the ball, and, with the scrum in a strong attacking position, Carnoustie picked up and drove, recycled cleanly and drove until COLIN MURRAY burrowed over to touch down, but without the conversion.

The homesters made ground better than their opponents and again won scrum ball in the visitors’ 22, picking up and driving with ALLY MACDONALD making the touchdown, but again with no conversion.

Nathan Bowles was sent to the touchline by the referee to have a blood injury attended to and his replacement, Ian Cook, with his first touch of the ball, raced down the wing and when covered, near the corner, played the ball inside for supporting JOHNNY CHRISTIE to touch down.

Kirkcaldy came a bit more into the game with better field position, but the home defence, which was not under any real pressure, stood firm and on occasions drove upfield.

The next score came from the scrimmage, but, instead of driving, Carnoustie opted for a short inter-passing move which resulted in COLIN MURRAY crossing at the posts for his second try and with NIALL SWANSON converting.

Half-time: Carnoustie HSFP 22, Kirkcaldy 2nd XV 0.

Kirkcaldy started the second half kicking to the 22 where Carnoustie fielded and ran again, passing well before finding JASON DONNACHIE in space and he raced to the line to touch down near the posts, with the conversion added.

FPs continued to attack and a good move was finished off by IAN REID who touched down under the posts for NIALL SWANSON to convert.

As the rain ceased and the wind dropped Kirkcaldy found some momentum, pressing forward without threatening the home line, but Carnoustie could not get upfield and eventually the pressure told and penalties were conceded. From the second of successive awards Kirkcaldy tapped and ran at a disorganised defence to score under the posts with no conversion.

FPs restarted, but soon found themselves back on their heels, but Kirkcaldy made mistakes. From one, Carnoustie took advantage, hacking the loose ball upfield and chasing hard, with Johnny Christie and Craig Addison to the fore and with CRAIG ADDISON making the final kick and touchdown, but with no conversion.

Team: Coates, Donnachie, Addison, Van Niekirk, Bowles, Swanson, A. Franco, Murray, K. Franco, D. Rankin, Fraser, Downie, Macdonald, Reid, Christie, Cook, C. Rankin, Stewart, Langlands and Smart.
