Local U15 athlete Joel McFarlane has claimed his second British Championship title to add to nine Scottish titles won this year.

Joel, a pupil at Carnoustie High School and member of Arbroath and District Athletics Club, has represented Scottish Schools and Scotland at International competitions.

This weekend he competed in the England Athletics Combined Events Championship at Bedford International Stadium.

It was the fifth multi-events title Joel has won this season, to go with the Scottish and British Indoor Pentathlon titles won back in March.

His indoor season also included individual event title wins in the Scottish Schools U16, 60m hurdles and the Scottish Athletics U15, long jump, hurdles and high jump Championships.

At the start of the summer Joel retained the Scottish Schools U15 Pentathlon title he also won last year.

He also added individual event wins in the long jump, and 80m and 400m hurdles.

July also saw him retain the U15 Scottish Athletics Pentathlon gold.

This weekend saw Joel seal the title of best combined events athlete by winning the British Octathlon title at Bedford International Stadium with a new Championship record.

This event runs over two days and includes 100m, high jump, 400m, javelin, 80m hurdles, discus, pole vault and 1000m.

Joel led from the very first event.

Sunday was another good day with his discus and pole vault matching his previous days javelin as the best performance in an individual event by any Scottish athlete this season.

These personal bests meant Joel was able to stretch his lead and he managed to accumulate a new British Championship record points total of 4364.

Joel also set the new indoor Scottish Pentathlon record in March.

His next goal is the Scottish age group Championships at Grangemouth on August 23 where he is targeting individual gold medals in long jump, 80m hurdles and javelin, all of which he is currently ranked number one.
