Carnoustie on a high

Blairgowrie 11, Carnoustie 24

CARNOUSTIE High School FPs travelled to Blairgowrie on Saturday for their last game of the season.

The visitors kicked off with Blairgowrie fielding and kicking infield for Carnoustie to field and find touch. Blair knocked on at the line-out with FPs driving from the scrum, only to be penalised which allowed the homesters to open the scoring.

FPs sent the ball through the hands from the scrum before kicking, with Blair winning the line-out and driving to gain a penalty, which was sent wide. The home players fielded the drop out, but FPs turned the ball over, going quickly through the hands before driving, but were held up over the line. They won the five-metre scrum and Owen Hughes took off at pace, feeding Chris Rankin who found SEAN NICHOLSON in sufficient space to run in and touchdown. The conversion was wide.

From a line-out deep in the home 22, Blair cleared with the return kick being put out on the full. The home team won the scrum and went through the hands, but were caught in possession and the ball turned over, only for Carnoustie to drive and knock on.

The hosts then gained a penalty but missed the posts and FPs found touch from the drop-out. Blair drove from the line-out and gained a penalty, which they succeeded in converting.

Graham Hay then broke at pace and shrugged off defenders before slipping a pass to STEWART MILLAR, who touched down. NIALL SWANSON added the conversion.

Half-time: Blairgowrie 6, Carnoustie 12.

The hosts fielded the drop-out and drove before kicking and with Carnoustie slow to react, they regathered the ball and with good hands and quick recycling crossed in the corner, but too far out for the conversion.

Blairgowrie dropped out deep with FPs fielding but knocking on. The scrum was taken against the head and quick Carnoustie hands gained 30 metres. Again the ball went quickly out wide giving COLIN JEFFREY space to touch down, but again it was too wide for conversion.

From a scrum, the visitors drove, recycled, and sent the ball swiftly to GRAHAM HAY who drove with pace and strength to touch down at the posts. NIALL SWANSON converted.

The win sees Carnoustie leap-frogging both Blairgowrie and Kinross in the league table.

Team: Burwood, Bowles, Cook, Nicholson, Swanson, Rankin, Hughes, Christie, Reid, Millar, Cowan, Dissel, Murray, Dawson, Shepherd, Addison, Hall, Feighan and Esposito.
