Having clinched a top three place in a Canadian tournament Catriona Matthew squeezed a trip to Carnoustie Country into her schedule.

“I always enjoy spending time in Carnoustie Country, “ said Catriona, who is one of the hot tips for this year’s Ricoh Women’s British Open, a title she won in 2009.

“There’s such a fantastic variety of top golf courses within a 40-minute drive, you can play lots of quality golf without travelling too far.”

Carnoustie Country Ambassador Catriona started her visit at Montrose, where she launched the World Hickory Open 2013 by playing a tournament against the current WHO champion, Rick Valentine. This was followed by visit to Carnoustie Championship for an interview with Sky Sports.

Sky Sports reporter Katy Mathieson explained that this interview will form part of Sky Sport’s coverage of the Solheim Cup, the biannual golf tournament for professional women golfers contested by Team Europe and Team USA, and will be broadcast on August 15.

“Catriona is one of the UK and Europe’s leading women golfers,” said Katy. “With Sky’s coverage of the Solheim Cup fast approaching, who better to talk to than one of the most experienced members of Team Europe?”

Since Catriona was appointed Carnoustie Country Ambassador, she’s been consistently in the top rankings of the world’s women golfers, won the Ladies’ Irish Open in 2012 and recently came second at the 2013 LPGA Championship in Rochester, New York, narrowly missing out to world number one Inbee Park in a sudden-death play off.

“With the Carnoustie Country logo proudly emblazoned on her golf tops, Catriona has provided Carnoustie Country with considerable media coverage at the world’s top women’s golf tournaments,” said Councillor Mairi Evans, Angus Council’s tourism spokesperson.

“On behalf of Carnoustie Country, I’d like to wish Catriona all the very best for this year’s Ricoh Women’s British Open, which is at St Andrews from August 1 to 4.”

Councillor Evans revealed that a team from Carnoustie Country will be at the Ricoh Women’s British Open, where they will be highlighting the events in the inaugural Carnoustie Country Golf Festival, Carnoustie Country’s courses and accommodation providers to tour operators and golf journalists.
