Comprehensive win for Carnoustie

Carnoustie Development XV 57, Harris 2nd XV 19

CARNOUSTIE Rugby Development XV faced a visiting Harris 2nd XV on Saturday in a winner takes all double header encounter.

The homesters immediately showed their intentions with a ferocious kick return by Ian Reid which almost led to an early score. Led by the evergreen John Murphy the Carnoustie pack dominated the early rucks and a quick ball from the breakdown allowed Christie to unleash the power of Craig Reid in the centre. His rampaging run led to IAN REID, whose support running meant he was available for the offload, to score the first try.

After this point it looked like the floodgates might open with wave after wave of attacks met by resolute defence by the visitors. This couldn’t be kept up and eventually the tries came, again from I. REID, CHRISTIE and STARKEY.

Half time: Carnoustie Development XV 21, Harris 2nd XV 7.

As the teams changed ends so, it appeared, did their fortunes. The referee blew up every infringement which led to two tries in succession for Harris.

Despite this Murphy rallied his troops and the injection of the experienced Esposito fired up the players around him and they turned the screw with tries from DOZER, PATERSON, STARKEY and a lung busting run from the home fly half, squeezing in at the corner, for the bonus point try.

The performance was more important than the result and with the first XV coach watching from the sidelines he can be sure these players will be pushing for promotion to the senior side.

Team: Crowe, Cook, C. Reid, I. Reid, D. Newith, Collins, Shepard, D. Christie, J. Christie, Murphy, Esposito, Souter, Murray, Paterson, Franco, and Dow.
