County golfers remain unbeaten

HAVING opened with a 5-3 victory over Fife, Angus County Golf Association remain unbeaten in the Provan Salver inter-area competition.

They earned a 4-4 draw with holders Clackmannan at Dollar on Sunday.

Clackmannan names first: Darren Hulston, Dollar, beat George Finlay, Ballumbie Castle, 3 and 2; Steve McIvor, Alva, lost to Stuart Smith, Downfield, 5 and 4; Jamie Aitken, Alloa, beat Ross Coull, Edzell, 5 and 4; John Maxwell, Tulliallan, lost to Gary Tough, Edzell, 4 and 3; Ian Guthrie, Alloa, lost to William Bremner, Edzell, 5 and 4; David Milloy, Alloa, beat Maurice Lindsay, Broughty, two holes; Scott Moffat, Braehead, beat Kris Harper, Carnoustie, 5 and 3; Scott Hunter, Tillicoultry, lost to Steven Cargill, Arbroath, 5 and 4.

In the day’s other Provan Salver match, Perth and Kinross won 4½-3½ against Fife at Pitlochry.

The final two fixtures in the competition, Angus v Perth and Kinross at Monifieth and Fife v Clackmannan, will be played on April 24.

County Ladies win

ANGUS County Ladies beat Carnoustie Golf Club 4½-1½ in the annual Sunningdales match over the Burnside on Sunday.

Carnoustie names first: Paul Drummond and Jim Farrell halved with Claire Penman and Heather Munro; Kenny Fraser and Derek Cochrane lost to Jackie Brown and Lynne Fenton, one hole; Mel Shepherd and Ian MacGregor beat Katie Reid and Fiona Gilbert, one hole; John Webster and Mark Robertson lost to Shonagh Raitt and Kathleen Sutherland, 2 and 1; Dan Murray and Ian Harrison lost to Louise Smith and Ashley Smith, two holes; John Reid and Ritchie Kerr lost to Fiona Sinclair and Jessica Meek, one hole.

Junior County Ladies

JESSICA Meek, Carnoustie Ladies, won the Angus Junior Ladies Championship at Forfar on Tuesday with a 6 and 5 victory over clubmate Ailsa Summers, the defending champion.

Three up at the turn, Jessica covered the next four holes in one-under to take the title in style.

The previous day she won the Angus Junior Ladies Spring Meeting over the same course. Her net 73, off four, pipped Ailsa Summers (2) 73 on the better inward half.

University Ladies

MONIFIETH’S Rebecca Wilson and Ashley Smith were second and fourth respectively in the Scottish Universities Ladies’ Order-Of-Merit for 2010-11.

Based on points awarded in a series of order-of-merit events, the leading final placings were as follows: 1, Jane Turner, Robert Gordon’s, 1,700 points; 2, Rebecca Wilson, Stirling, 1,550 points; 3, Gemma Bradbury, St Andrews, 1,325 points; 4, Ashley Smith, St Andrews, 1,062 points; 5, Harriet Beasley, Stirling, 950 points.

Scottish Boys’

TALENTED young golfers from 151 different clubs will be aiming for glory when they tee-off in the Scottish Boys’ Championship at Dunbar from April 11 to 16.

Local interest this year lies with Calum McKay of Grange Golf Club and Monifieth’s Grant Bowman, who have first round ties on Monday against Bradley Kelly, Bearsden, and Rory Stewart, Crieff, respectively.

Midland Alliance

MIDLAND Golfers’ Alliance held the W.H. Miller Team Competition over Monifeith Medal on Tuesday.

Montrose assistant pro Graeme Brown made it three wins in a row by taking first scratch prize with a four-under-par 67.

Arthur Farquharson, Downfield, won the handicap section with a net 66, off 11. He partnered John Rankin, Scotscraig, (8) and Ian Mitchell, Downfield, (8) to first prize in the team competition with a net 59.

Monifieth Medal Course has been announced as the number one course for the 2012 Scottish Alliance Championship; Arbroath will be the number two course if the entry justifies the use of two courses.

Letham Grange Seniors

LETHAM Grange Seniors held their final weekly stableford over the Buddon Links Course, Carnoustie, last Wednesday.

R. Speirs was first with 36 points, T. Cruikshank second with 33 points, and A. Carrie third with 32 points.

The seniors are grateful to the starters and staff at Carnoustie for their hospitality during the temporary closure of their own course.
