Cup win for under-18s

AFTER five attempts to play at Mannofield were postponed due to rain, Forfarshire’s under-18s finally played their second-round Scottish Cup tie at Forthill on Thursday evening thanks to Aberdeenshire conceding home advantage.

A good win by the home team means they will play Drumpellier in the semi-final at Shawholm, home of Poloc CC, on Sunday at 1 p.m. If they win through to the final, they will meet the winner of Carlton v Prestwick.

A bus will be going through to Shawholm. Anyone interested contact Bryce Robertson on 07799 678613 as soon as possible.

It wasn’t such good news in the other games with only Forthill 2nd XI winning a friendly against St Andrews University Staff and Forthill managing to beat Caledonian Academy on Sunday.

Forfarshire v Aberdeenshire

Batting first in this Under-18s Scottish Cup tie at Forthill on Thursday, Jack Hogarth and Lachlan Tosh faced the strong opening attack of Proud and Martin and both fell trying to force the score along against accurate opening spells. Christian Robertson started confidently with a cover drive for four, but was bowled by Chandu shortly after, to leave the Forfs 30 for 3, after eight overs.

Craig Morrison, 46, and Rory Johnston 17 not out, produced a crucial fourth wicket partnership, with an aggressive Craig and with Rory providing excellent support they jointly add 61 in eight overs before Craig fell LBW to the returning Martin, in the 16th over, at 96 for 4. Marshall MacLeod, Samir Hill and Chris Welsh all hit valuable runs in the last few overs to see the score reach 110 for 6 at the end of 20 overs.

Aberdeenshire started the run chase well, but with the score on 47, Chris Welsh beat the defences of Chandu to start a change in fortunes. Proud (41) then drove hard at a delivery from Rory Johnston that flew high to Chris welsh at short third man, and with the catch comfortably taken, Aberdeenshire were 63 for 2. Lachlan Tosh came into the attack and bowled four tidy overs that made scoring difficult for the new batsmen. Rory Johnston’s spell got even better with two wickets in his third over, to all but seal victory with the visitors requiring 33 from the last four overs.

An excellent display with the ball and in the field saw the young Forfs safely through to the quarter-finals and an away trip to Broomhall, near Rosyth.
