Danny’s fightback just not enough as he loses out at 19th

CALEDONIA Golf Club’s Danny Elder, the leading local qualifier, was beaten in the final of the Craw’s Nest Tassie over the Carnoustie Championship Course on Saturday afternoon.

Two down with two to play, Danny fought back to square the match on the 18th green before losing at the 19th to Jack Clegg from the Calcot Park club, Reading.

Two other local players also qualified for the Tassie matchplay stages, but both made early exits.

Scott Nicol, New Taymouth, lost 3 and 2 to Barry Hynd, Pitreavie, in the second round, while former winner Sandy Fairweather, Caledonia, made it through to the last 16 before going out 4 and 3 to Mat Roche, Baildon.

Winner of the Maulesbank Trophy handicap event over the Burnside Course was David Willey from Castlerock Golf Club, Coleraine in Northern Ireland, who defeated Rodney Hemingway, from Heaton Park Golf Centre near Manchester, by one hole in the final.
