Defeat for Ailsa

CARNOUSTIE Ladies’ Golf Club’s Ailsa Summers (18) was beaten four and two by 16-year-old Lauren Whyte, St Regulus, in Saturday’s Paul Lawrie Foundation Scottish under-18 girls’ Championship 18-hole final over the Crail Golfing Society’s Craighead Course in Fife.

She had beaten Alexandra Tait, St Regulus, in the first round, Hannah Scott, Broomieknowe, in the second, Nicola Callander, Mill Green, in the quarter-finals and Tegan Seivwright, Deeside, in the semis.

Lauren, from St Andrews, will represent Scotland in this week’s European Young Masters in Hungary as the new Paul Lawrie Foundation Scottish under-18 girls’ champion.

She had beaten the top seed and 2010 champion Lesley Atkins, Gullane Ladies, in the semi-finals and played quality golf to take the measure of international team-mate Ailsa, who is the Angus girls’ and women’s county champion.

Lauren had six birdies and was approximately two under par for the holes played and Ailsa had three birdies. She started 6-6 to be two down on the third tee and Lauren still led by two holes at the turn.

She increased her advantage to three with a birdie at the tenth, but Ailsa countered with a birdie at the 11th to get back to two down. Lauren really clinched her victory by winning the 12th with a birdie and the 13th with a par to stand four up on the 14th tee.

Ailsa won the 14th but, after a half at the 15th, Lauren won the title with a par 4 at the 16th. Heather Munro, Monifieth, and Claire Robertson, Carnoustie Ladies, both went out in the first round, and Jessica Meek, Carnoustie Ladies, was beaten in the quarter-finals by Rachel Walker, Dumfries & County.

In international team

JESSICA Meek and Ailsa Summers, both Carnoustie Ladies, along with Lauren Whyte, St Regulus, have been named in the Scotland team for the under-18 girls’ home Internationals at Radyr Golf Club, Cardiff from August 7 to 9.
