Defeat for ‘Shire in play-off match

FORFARSHIRE suffered a five-wicket home defeat to Carlton on Sunday in the first of their three Scottish National League Premiership play-off matches.

On winning the toss, ‘Shire opted to bat first and found the going tough in the early overs against the Carlton opening attack of Drummond and Mommsen.

Graeme Garden fell early after chipping a delivery from Mommsen to mid-on, and after a brief recovery the introduction of Ahmad saw Ryan Watson loft a drive to mid-off and four balls later Brendan Ford was caught and bowled with the total on 41.

Craig Wallace, Scott Galloway and Umair Mohammed also fell cheaply to Ahmad, who completed a five wicket haul while conceding only 20 runs in 10 overs.

At 72 for six, Tim Hancock joined Tony Weed in the middle and an 83-run partnership developed as Tony set about the Carlton bowling with Tim giving good support.

Tony’s 74 not out from 68 balls included six fours and a six over mid-wicket and restored some respectability to the scoreboard, but just as the pair were set to increase the scoring rate in the final eight overs, Tim top-edged a sweep to fine leg.

Shortly afterwards, Jalees Ahmed was run out and any remaining hopes of a 200-plus total disappeared as ‘Shire were bowled out for 178 in the 47th over.

Graeme Quinn struck an early blow for Forfarshire when Srinivasan was caught behind and just as the game was drifting in Carlton’s direction a dramatic first over from Andy Wallace saw Mommsen leave a good length ball that nipped back to hit the top of his off-stump and lift home spirits with it.

The bails went flying again in Andy’s second over as Gilmour played round a straight one and ‘Shire were back in the game at 44 for three.

Drummond launched his second ball over mid-wicket for six and joined English in adding 37 for the fifth wicket before Ryan Watson had Drummond safely caught by Scott Galloway at mid-on.

English benefited from some luck as Carlton reached 100. Some streaky shots flying into gaps, but his innings of 72 not out guided the league leaders to victory in the 39th over.

Mayfield v Forthill

Forthill returned from Doo’cot Park, Perth, on Saturday knowing that a top-two finish had been secured after sweeping aside Mayfield by 130 runs.

Back after a three-week break, Dean Fearn opened the batting and his 39 took advantage of some poor home catching.

At the other end, Steven Bedford reached 35 before playing across a straight delivery and was bowled with the total on 98 for two after 28 overs.

Gavin Martin continued his fine run of form and his well constructed 55, along with a quick 54 from Elliot McCandless, gave the innings the momentum it needed heading into the final overs.

Mayfield fought back with four quick wickets to limit the run-rate in the last five overs, but still the innings finished in style with Graeme Black lifting the final delivery over long-on to see 213 for six scored.

The Mayfield run-chase started well with the free-scoring Fergusson punishing any loose delivery.

However, a faint nick on to his pads was collected by Elliot McCandless at short-leg and sportingly no decision from the umpire was needed.

Barnsley (15) and a dogged 13 from Riley held up Forthill’s efforts for a while, but once both were dismissed by Gordon Walker, a steady procession of batsmen came and went and along with a dead-eye direct hit run-out from Dean Fearn, the home reply concluded on 83 all out in the 39th over.

Strathearn XI v Forthill XI

Forthill XI should have had two fixtures over the weekend, but Glendelvine ruled their Spittalfield pitch unplayable early on Saturday morning, so they had to make do with a trip to Doo’cot Park, Perth, on Sunday to take on Strathearn XI.

Andrew Cameron and Samir Hill (two for 8) removed the home openers before double figures were recorded and the innings continued in the same fashion as Glenn Carnegie (five for 22) ran through the Strathearn XI middle-order in an excellent nine-over spell.

Christian Robertson’s 31 not out and 18 from Andrew Cameron saw Forthill XI through to a seven wicket victory with 16 overs to spare.
