Disappointing defeat for ‘Shire at half-way point in the season

FORFARSHIRE started the second half of the Scottish National League Premiership season with a disappointing loss away to Stirling County at New Williamfield on Saturday.

On winning the toss, Forfarshire chose to bat first and openers Brendan Ford (25) and Matthew Parker (18) took the total to 34 before an eight over spell of batting madness saw five wickets fall for only 30 runs.

The collapse saw Ryan Watson (59 from 78 balls) take on the unfamiliar role of anchor-man, and along with Umair Mohammed (67 from 93 balls) set about re-building the innings. The partnership added 119 in 26 overs and both were unfortunate to fall to good outfield catches just as the run-rate was increasing towards the final overs.

With few wickets remaining, Forfarshire limped to 227 all out in the 49th over.

Stirling’s opening pairing of Anderson and Edwards looked in little difficulty in the early stages of the run-chase, but with the total on 49, Anderson skyed a delivery from Brendan Ford and found Umair Mohammed at square leg. Edwards made the most of an early chance and pushed on towards a century that was to lead Stirling to their first league win of the season.

A wicket each for Andy Wallace and Aman Bailwal was of little consolation as ‘Shire slumped to a seven wicket defeat and a performance that is best forgotten.

Forthill v St Modans

Forthill’s home match against St Modans in Clubsport Strathmore and Perthshire Union Division One saw Graeme Garden hit a career best 136 and share a partnership just short of 200 with Jalees Ahmed, who hit a fine 59.

The excellent start allowed the remaining Forthill batsmen to play with ease and the total raced along to 323 for five at the end of 45 overs.

Mainstay of the St Modans’ reply was professional Mathews, whose 102 gave respectability to the visitors’ total as they were bowled out for 163.

Following a 44 run home victory in a midweek friendly against Dundee University Staff last Wednesday evening, Forthill XI were in confident mood for Sunday’s away fixture against Montrose in Clubsport Strathmore and Perthshire Union Division 2.

Union Park was unusually warm and sunny as Forthill XI batted first. Andrew Cameron and Steven Sim got the day off to a comfortable start before Clark McConnachie (62) joined Steven to take the total up to 143 in the 30th over. Clark then attempted to clear the ropes, but was well caught by Christie.

Adam Hill made his intentions clear by hitting his first ball for 4 and his second for a straight 6, but with wickets tumbling at the other end, hopes of a high total started to disappear. Scott Carnegie (27 not out) settled the innings and in a sparkling partnership with Adam, added 59 in just six overs, Adam finishing with a timely 60 not out.

The Montrose reply never gained the momentum needed to chase down the 242 for six total and with the home top three back in the pavilion by the time the total reached 25, Forthill XI always looked to be in command.

Two wickets a-piece for Glenn Carnegie, Craig McConnachie and Abdullah Awan saw the home side bowled out for 153 with only Petrie (29) and Galt (28) making significant contributions with the bat.
