Early cup exit for ‘Shire

NATIONAL League Premiership pacesetters Forfarshire were sent crashing out of the Scottish Cup recently at the second round stage on the receiving end of a 90-run thrashing away to lower league opponents East Kilbride, who had accounted for Huntly in the previous round.

Forfarshire won the toss and enjoyed early success after inviting East Kilbride to bat first on the Torrance House pitch. Bocock was trapped lbw by Aman Bailwal off the first ball of the match, but fellow opener Singh was then joined by Kampman and the pair took the score past 75 in the first 15 overs.

When Kampman was bowled by Umair Mohammed for 31, incoming batsman Smith continued the supporting role, making 28 before being caught by Matthew Parker.

However, Singh had contributed 102 from 98 balls when he was eventually adjudged leg before off the bowling of Umair Mohammed. At that point, the score was 203 for five, but a late-order collapse masterminded by Ryan Watson and Richard Gallagher saw East Kilbride all out for 226.

Ryan Watson and Scott Cameron got Forfarshire’s reply off to an aggressive start, but with the score on 44, home skipper Umair Saeed made the breakthrough, dismissing Ryan for 32. Only five more runs had been added when Richards picked up the wicket of Matthew Parker, but it was spinner Lyons who turned the match East Kilbride’s way, taking four for 19 from his 10 overs.

Two wickets for Kampman, including that of Scott Cameron (24), and one for Mahmood brought the inevitable ever closer, and the final blow came when Dean Fearn was brilliantly stumped by Smith off the bowling of Saeed, leaving ‘Shire 136 all out in the 36th over.

With Forfarshire’s home fixture against Dunfermline Knights and Forthill’s away match against Arrowdawn Gordonians at Countesswells both cancelled on Saturday due to rain, Forthill XI were the only club side to see league action this weekend at home to Glendelvine on Sunday.

Andrew Cameron and Steven Sim scored freely in the opening overs as the total reached 40 after 10 overs, giving Forthill XI a good platform on which to build, but from there the run-rate fell dramatically and only 25 runs were added in the next 10 overs. Andrew fell for 16 while trying to accelerate the scoring and shortly afterwards Adam Hill was bowled by a decent yorker, which saw Glenn Carnegie join Steven Sim and they took the score up to 84 before Steven tried one late cut too many and was bowled for 36.

Glenn was then joined by Scott Carnegie and they scored well in the latter stages of the innings before a communication lapse saw Glenn run out for 41. Scott was eventually bowled for 40 as Forthill XI headed for a final score of 199 for seven in 45 overs. Glendelvine’s opening partnership of M. Yellowlees and R. Thompson was always going to be key to the game, and they showed how to run well between the wickets, picking up runs with little difficulty.

With the total on 94, Samir Hill plucked a catch out of the air to dismiss Yellowlees and later had Thompson caught by Andrew Cameron for 85 to leave the visitors on 163 for two after 37 overs. Two further wickets set up a tense finish as Glendelvine required 28 from the last five overs with new men at the crease, but they eased over the winning line with four balls to spare.
