CARNOUSTIE athlete Eilish McColgan set a new Scottish record for the 3,000m steeplechase at the Diamond League meeting in Birmingham. She also carded a new UK record for a runner aged under 23. Her time was 9 minutes 47.03 seconds.
Her time meets the qualifying standard for the World Championships.
The 20-year-old is the daughter of medal-winning runner Liz McColgan and is a sports scholar at Dundee University.
The Carnoustie athlete is one of Scotland’s most promising middle distance runners. Two months ago she won the 2,000m steeplechase at a BUCS track and field event. She recently finished fourth in the final of the 1,500m at the Aviva UK indoor championships.
She still has some way to go to emulate her mother’s achievements. Liz won gold at 10,000m in two successive Commonwealth Games and at the 1991 World Championships.
