Forfarshire v. Aberdeenshire

FORFARSHIRE kept their SNCL Premiership title hopes alive with a four-wicket win over Aberdeenshire at Forthill on Saturday and collected the R.G. Tait Memorial Trophy in the process.

Aberdeenshire were invited to bat first and made steady progress until Brendan Ford bowled Nanthakumaran in the 12th over with the total on 37. Seven balls later, Graeme Quinn induced a false shot from Cross and Graeme Garden took a simple catch at mid-off.

A fourth wicket partnership of 39 between Tomlinson (36) and Reid (40) saw Aberdeenshire recover slightly, but when both fell in the space of an over ‘Shire appeared to have the match under control at 127 for five.

The visitors’ overseas amateur Damle then hit 44 not out from 40 balls in the closing stages of the innings to set a target of 207 for seven.

The early loss of Brendan Ford brought Graeme Garden (36 from 66 balls) and Scott Galloway (25 from 48 balls) together and their 68 run partnership made early inroads into the run-chase, but with the Aberdeenshire bowlers keeping to a tight line and length it took three boundaries from Craig Wallace in a quick 18 to give the reply some momentum.

When Ryan Watson and Craig Wallace fell within the space of five overs, Forfarshire were struggling at 117 for five in the 31st over.

However, Aman Bailwal then hit 21 from 35 balls before being bowled by visiting pro Strydom with the total on 135.

A gutsy partnership of 73 between Umair Mohammed and Tony Weed saw ‘Shire secure a narrow victory, Umair finishing on a run-a-ball 44 and Tony 24 from 45 balls.

Rossie Priory v Forthill

In the Clubsport Strathmore and Perthshire Union Division One on Saturday, Forthill overcame Rossie Priory at Inchture with a crucial one wicket victory.

Runs were hard to come by as the home batsmen struggled to 43 for two after 25 overs. Dale Sweeney and Andrew Cameron bowled economical opening spells, but it took the introduction of Callum Walker (two for 10) to see the first wicket fall. Gordon Walker then sparked a collapse and a seven over spell saw five wickets fall with just 16 runs conceded as Rossie headed for 85 all out.

Forthill’s opening pair of Dean Fearn and Steven Bedford fell early, but Gavin Martin (42 not out) and Scott Cameron (20) offered the resistance that was necessary on the slow wicket. With wickets tumbling at the other end, Gavin looked to be running out of partners, but Gordon Walker hung around long enough to let Forthill scrape home with one wicket and nine overs remaining.

Almond Valley v Forthill XI

On Sunday, Forthill XI travelled to Doo’cot Park, Perth, where the Almond Valley batsmen were no match for the visiting bowlers as the total slumped to 40 for eight after 20 overs. A late rally from Rodgers (25) saw the scoreline creep up to 78 before the last wicket fell, Craig McConnachie and Glenn Carnegie each being rewarded with three wickets and Samir Hill and Jim Inglis taking two apiece.

Forthill XI’s youthful opening partnership of Scott Cameron (48 not out) and Christian Robertson (20 not out) combined well against the home bowling attack and saw another 25 points collected with little difficulty.
