Carnoustie HSFP 98, Howe of Fife 2nd XV 19

Carnoustie continued their quest for further league points on Saturday when they entertained Howe of Fife 2nd XV on a pitch that was wet in places.

The home side kicked off with Howe fielding and sending the ball wide, but defensive pressure caused them to knock on. The scrum was driven, but the kick went out on the full and the visitors kicked from the line out, allowing FPs to field and run the ball wide, but they were forced to touch.

The line-out was won and the ball driven allowing DANNY VAN NIEKERK to break off and touchdown, with the conversion added. Howe kicked the restart out on the full and Carnoustie drove from the scrum, recycled to send the ball wide, with MICHAEL DOWNIE flying clear on the wing, to touchdown, again with the conversion added.

The homesters fielded the restart, but conceded the penalty. Carnoustie took the line-out against the throw and with quick hands sent MICHAEL DOWNIE into space for a further touchdown, with no conversion. They fielded the restart and ran the ball, knocking on close to the touch line, with the ball running to touch.

Howe opted for the line-out, but didn’t throw the ball straight and from the scrum the Carnoustie forwards broke with OTTO SCHWEIZER getting the touchdown and with the conversion added.

The Fifers restarted and fielded, setting up a drive. The scrum-half broke clear to touchdown and with the conversion. Howe fielded the restart, but lost the ball and Carnoustie ran, gained a penalty, won the line-out and drove, with IAN REID touching down, but with no conversion.

Carnoustie knocked on at the restart, but pressured Howe also into a knock on and from the scrum they fed the backs with DANNY VAN WYK putting a short chip over the top and regathering to score, with the conversion added. From the restart FPs conceded a penalty and Howe found touch, won the line, chipped over the top, regathered and made the touchdown with the conversion added.

With half-time imminent, Carnoustie won scrum ball, sending it down to MICHAEL DOWNIE to touchdown. The conversion was missed.

Half-time: Carnoustie HSFP 43, Howe of Fife 2nd XV 14.

Howe got the second half under way with Carnoustie fielding and running the ball, but knocking on. FPs then drove the scrum, before running the ball, but they were forced to touch. The ball went loose at the line out and was poached by Carnoustie and run by the forwards before being finished off by STEWART MILLAR, but with no conversion.

The restart kick did not travel 10 metres and Carnoustie gained a penalty at the scrum, tapped the ball and with good hands put DANNY FINDLAY into space to cross, with the conversion added.

Carnoustie spread the ball wide, from a scrum, with winger LEWIS THOMS touching down, with the conversion added. Howe conceded a penalty, which was tapped and driven, recycled and run with DANNY VAN WYK making the final break to touchdown with the conversion added.

The Fifers fielded the restart and ran the ball before gaining a penalty, which was tapped and run wide at pace to pierce the defence and touchdown, but with no conversion. Howe fielded, but turned the ball over giving Carnoustie the chance to move the ball wide to allow MICHAEL DOWNIE to run clear and touchdown with the conversion added.

From this point onwards Carnoustie totally dominated, with CRAIG ADDISON crossing and the conversion added, which was followed by tries from DANNY VAN NIEKERK, IAN REID and finally MICHAEL DOWNIE.
