On Saturday Arbroath ABC’s Mark Fairweather travelled to the the Scotstoun Sports Centre, Glasgow, to compete in the semi-final of the middleweight division for the Boxing Scotland Ltd., Senior Championship title.
His opponent was the highly regarded seasoned international Kieran Smith, Springhill ABC, one of the fancied medal hopes for the forthcoming Commonwealth Games.
Boxing behind a tight guard Fairweather patiently probed for openings against a wily south-paw who stalked his opponent drawing, leads and trying to land counter punches. Fairweather’s hand speed caused Smith a few problems, but towards the end of the round he rocked Fairweather with a hard two punch combination which secured the round.
In the second Fairweather found himself manoeuvered to the corners where Smith worked to the body landing some good shots. Fairweather’s excellent conditioning stood him in good stead as he weathered the storm and fired back with fast two punch combinations. Smith was ominously untroubled and was regularly beginning to get into range to land shots on target.
The final round started at a good pace. Fairweather began to have success with right crosses but Smith quickly adapted to the situation and landed clean shots on target. Fairweather was competitive to the bell but Kieran Smith was rightly awarded a points win and proceeds to the final.
Mark Fairweather can feel justly proud of his efforts in this competition and showed he has the ability, the determination, and the raw courage to progress further in his boxing career.
Although defeated Mark can reap a keep of positives from a sterling performance against a very experienced athlete.
