NEWLY turned professional Caroline Hedwall says it was an honour to get the Ricoh Women’s Open under way yesterday (Thursday).

The Swede hit the first shot of the competition and returned with a three under par 69.

Hedwall, who was the best amateur player at last year’s open already has two career victories to her name after turning professional just this year.

And she was delighted to be playing her first British Open this year at Carnoustie as a professional.

She said: “Someone told me I was going to be the first one, and I thought that’s a great honour for sure.

“It’s a great golf course and a lot of fun that the women get to play here.”

Hedwall has the support of her sister Jacqueline as her caddie and the pair will be back out on the Championship Course later this morning (Friday) at 11.15 a.m.

She added: “She’s not doing the yardages but she’s really good at reading putts so she helped me a lot about that.

“She just gives me confidence and we have a lot of fun together.”
