Carnoustie HSFP 52,

Glenrothes 2nd XV 0

Carnoustie HSFP continued their quest for league points on Saturday when they played host to the basement team, Glenrothes 2nd XV.

FPs kicked off on a sodden pitch and in pouring rain and immediately pressed forward, ignoring the conditions and playing the ball through the hands.

They took an early lead with good scrum ball allowing quick movement of the ball to NIALL SWANSON who broke the defensive line to touch down at the posts for CHRIS RANKIN to add the conversion.

The visitors restarted but could not gain usable ball, allowing Carnoustie to continue to attack. A dominant scrum ensured a steady supply of the ball and from an attacking position Chris Rankin ran wide of the scrum and with three men in support fired a long ball to the outside man, JASON DONNACHIE. He beat the cover to run round to the posts and touch down giving CHRIS RANKIN a straight forward conversion.

The pattern of play continued with pressure on the visitors whose defence was again broken by centre CRAIG ADDISON, who took the ball at pace, broke the attempted tackle and touched down at the posts with the conversion added.

The home players then allowed the intensity of the game to slip and Glenrothes made good field position. Carnoustie were pinned back and could not get clear, but their line was never under pressure.

The ball went sideways or was kicked inaccurately until, on the point of half time, Carnoustie turned the ball over in their own 22 and ran down the touchline. The ball went through several hands until KEVIN FRANCO broke a despairing tackle to cross in the corner, but too far out for the conversion.

Half-time: Carnoustie HSFP 26, Glenrothes 2nd XV 0

Glenrothes restarted the game with Carnoustie fielding cleanly and running the ball. They were soon into their stride and raised the pace of the game to put the visitors under pressure.  The first try of the half fell to JASON DONNACHIE who crossed out wide, again too far for the conversion.

Tries came at intervals with KEVIN FRANCO crossing at the posts with the conversion added. From a series of forward drives, cleanly recycled ball and good clean ball handling, NICK SCOTT plunged over for his first ever rugby try and again the conversion was added.

Within minutes the scorer’s joy turned to despair when he was carried off with an ankle injury. The game was rounded off by JASON DONNACHIE touching down near the posts to complete a hat trick of tries. NIALL SWANSON converted.

Team: Langlands, Donnachie, Addison, Coates, Bowles, Swanson, Rankin, Scott, Murray, Campbell, Downie, Fraser, Franco, Reid, Hughes, Millar, Macdonald, Stewart, Cook and Mullins.
