Curling

Success in Nationals

Sunday saw the 2015 Scottish Junior Men’s and Junior Women’s (Under-21) Championships come to a conclusion with success for local curlers.

Angus Dowell (Evenie Water Curling Club) playing lead and Duncan Menzies (Letham Grange Curling Club) playing third in the team skipped by Bruce Mouat with Derek Sloan (second), won through in a tense final against Kyle Waddell with a well swept, must make dramatic last stone draw to the button.

Both Duncan and Angus started their curling career as young boys at Letham Grange Young Curlers under the tutorship of James Keillor and have progressed through the ranks to compete effectively both junior and adult competitions both at home and abroad.

They are now members of Forfar Young Curlers and have qualified for the men’s championship again this year and look forward playing against quality opposition in Perth shortly.

Three girls from Angus competed in the Junior Woman’s Final with Team MacDoald making a total of five Forfar Young Curlers challenging at the last stage of the competition.

Lesley Young (skip), Louise Joiner (second) and Beth Dandie (lead) came close clinching the title, but the 2014 champion held off a strong challenge with a perfect draw at the last end. See picture on page 44.
