A NEW invitational tournament for Scotland’s top girl golf prospects is to be played at Carnoustie in the spring.

Carnoustie Links Management Committee has given the use of the Championship, Burnside and Buddon courses to the Carnoustie Northern Ladies’ Committee to hold the inaugural Carnoustie Links Girls’ Challenge from Friday, March 30, to Sunday, April 1.

It will be run in conjunction with the Scottish Ladies’ Golfing Association as a 54-hole strokeplay tournament, and will have a field of only 12 girls, all aged under 18, chosen by the SLGA selectors.

Sponsorship for the event is from Abacus, which was secured by head professional at Carnoustie Links, Colin Sinclair.

The competition is being developed to try to give younger girls experience of a 54-hole event and give Scotland’s elite girls a chance to get together and get to know each other. The event is being run as a team building exercise, giving them the chance to socialise together as well as compete, with a full programme for the weekend.

Apart from the sponsorship, the Carnoustie Ladies’ Northern Committee will be using funds they accumulate each year by running the annual Carnoustie Ladies’ Northern Open. Carnoustie Ladies is the oldest women’s golf club in the world, founded in August, 1873.

The Carnoustie Championship Links will host the British Women’s Open Championship from June 26 to 30 next year.

Failed to make cut

CARNOUSTIE’S Ailsa Summers failed to survive the half way cut in the Spanish Women’s International Amateur Strokeplay Golf Championship at Alicante Golf Club on Tuesday.

She carded rounds of 84 and 77, for 161, to fail by four.

This leaves Carnoustie’s Jessica Meek as one of only two Scots to survive the cut, and with scores of 73 and 77 for six-over-par 150, she lies in 20th place, 12 shots behind leader Ha Range Lee on 138.
