CARNOUSTIE Rugby Club on Saturday travelled to face a resurgent Cumnock side which was coming off a resounding 70 points to nil victory.
The now annual fixture had added spice as it saw head coach Calum Owens return to his home club for the first time in 16 years. With a rousing team talk by captain and last season’s Caledonian player of the season, Kyle Burwood, ringing in their ears, Carnoustie took to the Broomfield pitch.
The 20 minutes that followed were above and beyond what even the most optomistic could have expected. With Carnoustie leading 18-0 and in total control at half-time, Coach Owens shook things up by replacing the experienced players with youngsters.
Danny Findlay, Andrew Morton and Andy Finn put in great performances after a shaky start, along with Peter Christie and John Murphy. With 20 minutes remaining Carnoustie led 18-17 and after bringing back on the more experienced players, the visitors punched through, gathering their own kick-off and scoring quickly to deflate the now tiring Cumnock side.
With the experience of Hughes and Rankin at 8 and 9, blending well with the youth of Franco and Bowles, Carnoustie rattled in three more unanswered tries. The final whistle was blown after a cheeky drop-goal by RANKIN which made the score 44 – 17.
Carnoustie now look forward to travelling to Waid tomorrow (Saturday). The kick-off is at 3 p.m.
Team: Nicholson, Shepherd, Burwood, Addison, Lynch, Swanson, Rankin, Hughes, J. Christie, Franco, Reid, Millar, Dawson, Bowles, Hall, Dissel, Murphy, Lawton, P. Christie, Finn, Findlay and Mullins.
