Ross is scratch champion in Kitchen Express tournament at Arbroath

MIDLAND Golfers’ Alliance held the JTC Kitchens Express Championship over 36 holes at Arbroath Links last Thursday, April 7.

Winner of the scratch championship was Downfield +3-handicapper Ross Bell, who scored 68 and 67 for an excellent five-under-par total of 135, three shots ahead of Edzell professional Alastair Webster.

The handicap championship was won by Arbroath’s Lindsay Cargill with a net aggregate of 143, playing off five.

Best placed of the local competitors was Ballumbie Castle scratch player George Finlay, who tied for third handicap prize with net 146.

In the McQueen Shield event played over 18 holes, the winner was Bob Redpath, Scotscraig, with a net 71, playing off five.

Lindsay Shield

CARNOUSTIE Golf Club has made a dismal start to the annual 50-a-side triangular competition for the Lindsay Shield, losing 34 and a half-15 and a half to St Andrews in the opening leg on Saturday.

St Andrews won 13 and a half-11 and a half at Carnoustie and by a whopping 21-4 margin over the Old Course.

Scottish Boys

BOTH local competitors made early exits from the annual Scottish Boys’ Matchplay Championship being held this week at Dunbar.

Calum McKay, Grange Golf Club, was first to bow out, losing by one hole to Bradley Kelly, Bearsden.

Later on Monday afternoon, Monifieth’s Grant Bowman also fell at the first round stage with a 21st hole defeat from Rory Stewart, Crieff.

No local player has won the boys’ national title since Carnoustie’s Steven Brown at Royal Aberdeen in 2001.
