Captain 52, Vice-captain 49
ON SATURDAY, Carnoustie Rugby held the annual captain versus vice-captain select game and kicking competition to bring the curtain down on the senior team’s season.
All players were invited to attempt a conversion and with a sudden death miss and your out rule in place, the pressure was on. In the end it came down to youth against experience with Dave Crowe facing Cal Owens with attempts from the halfway line. It was Cal who found his range first and claimed the Kicking Cup.
Historically the captains each select a team and lead them to the pitch. As both Swanson and Burwood were carrying injuries this was left to Nathan Bowles and Dave Christie. As the teams took to the field it was noted that once again the old heads had managed to find themselves pitted against the young bucks. With an average age difference of almost 10 years the game got under way and the ever vocal Carnoustie fans bore witness to some quality rugby.
Some fast flowing rugby led to scores from both sides but after the first 20 minutes it looked like the captain select were in complete control. The tide turned after the first interval as the vice-captain’s side reorganised themselves and with a couple of changes on either side, and some more direct rugby being played, the tries came thick and fast without either side taking a commanding lead.
In another battle of skill, pace and youth, against experience, it was the old lions who came out on top, winning by the narrowest of margins, with the final play of the game.
Carnoustie Developement XV’s next competitive match is on May 4 at home against Panmure.
