FORFARSHIRE leapfrogged Arbroath United back into second place in the Scottish National League Premiership with a resounding 60-run victory at Lochlands on Saturday.

On losing the toss, Forfarshire were asked to bat first on the bowler friendly pitch given the recent rain, but after the early loss of Brendan Ford, Ryan Watson (48 from 96 balls) and Graeme Garden (29 from 56 balls) made good use of some wayward bowling to reach 75 for one after 18 overs.

The introduction of Peal (three for 30) accounted for the ‘Shire middle-order and just as Ryan looked to up the pace in the final 10 overs, he picked out Vithana on the mid-wicket boundary and the situation in the game was then evenly balanced at 147 for five.

A valuable 19 from 21 balls by Jalees Ahmed saw Forfarshire up to 184 for nine at the end of 40 overs, some way short of the 200-plus total that had looked achievable early in the innings.

Brendan Ford had F. Burnett trapped in front in the first over of Arbroath’s reply, and two overs later Vithana was caught behind with the total on 16. Craig Wallace was in action again soon after when McLean nicked a delivery from Graeme Quinn and he held a sharp chance while standing up to the stumps to reduce the home side to 16 for three.

Jalees Ahmed held a good catch at mid-off to bring together C. Burnett and Byres Howe and their gritty style had the makings of a match-winning partnership, but a false shot from Burnett picked out the safe hands of Aman Bailwal. As the pressure built, Byres Howe found Umair Mohammed on the mid-wicket boundary to see Forfarshire take control at 76 for six.

The dangerous McGill faced only one ball in his 200th SNCL appearance and this effectively sealed the game as Arbroath eventually limped to 124 all out in the 38th over.

Forthill v Northern

Elliot McCandless reached three figures for the first time in his career and his 113 set Forthill up for a mammoth 293 for five against visitors Perth Northern.

Steven Bedford’s half-century along with 35 from Tim Hancock also made light work of the visiting attack and were it not for the soft outfield a total well in excess of 300 would have been scored.

The innings was finished off in fine style by Christian Robertson (23 not out) on his second team debut, who combined well with the youthful experience of Andrew Cameron (27 not out).

In reply, the Northern batsmen showed little intention of making any impact on the Forthill total and a delighted Alex Steele made an early impression behind the stumps with a catch off Andrew Cameron to remove visiting skipper Gourlay.

From there on, the total crept along and Northern finished on 115 all out.

Forthill XI v Strathmore XI

Forthill XI’s local derby on Saturday was cancelled when Dalnacraig was declared unplayable, but Sunday’s home fixture against Strathmore XI went ahead under blue skies and produced the club’s third win of the weekend.

Scott Cameron found the conditions to his liking as he batted throughout the Forthill XI innings for 99 not out, just failing to get the extra run to bring up three figures off the final ball of the innings. This fine performance, along with 21 not out from Scott Carnegie, 20 from Clark McConnachie and 19 from Glenn Carnegie saw Forthill XI post 199 for four at tea.

Strathmore XI’s reply faltered early, with Samir Hill (two for 17) sending Blackie and Couston back to the pavilion inside of seven overs.

A sixth wicket partnership of 45 between Hewitson (38) and Wilkie (22) repaired some of the early damage, but that was ended when Glenn Carnegie bowled Wilkie and Mo Chatterji had Hewitson caught by David Sim to all but end Strathie’s hopes of a win.
