Students are top of the cricketing class

Vihar Shah, University of Dundee 1st XI cricket captain, proudly held aloft the Clubsport Indoor Sixes Shield after his student team overcame Kinloch in a close-fought play-off final at the Mayfield Sports Centre, Dundee, last Wednesday night, March 19.

Earlier, University, who qualified for the play-offs in fourth place, had beaten table-toppers Arbroath by four runs. Chasing Arbroath’s 90, they were on 70 after nine overs, but three overs later they had eased on to a winning total of 94.

In the other semi-final between the second and third place qualifiers, Kinloch had passed Forfarshire’s modest total of 66, moving on to 68 with 11 balls remaining and blocking 10 of these to finish on just two runs more, but importantly, no loss of a wicket.

In the final, Kinloch batted first, but scored just 14 off the first four overs. They did advance to 68 after their 12 overs, but it wasn’t enough and University were able to pace themselves over the line managing 76, defending towards the end to avoid losing a wicket.

The third v fourth place game was a light-hearted affair with some comical batting, bowling and particularly fielding. No-one seemed much bothered that Forfarshire’s 124 was 19 runs too many for Arbroath.

Results: semi-finals - Arbroath 90, Dundee University 94; Forfarshire 66, Kinloch 70. Final - Kinloch 68, Dundee University 76. Third/fourth place play-off - Forfarshire 124, Arbroath 105.
