Students teach FPs a lesson

Carnoustie 0,

St Andrews University 50

CARNOUSTIE played host to St Andrews University on Saturday in the first of the return league fixtures, having given a good account of themselves in Fife.

The pitch was soft but overhead conditions were good. The visitors kicked off with Carnoustie fielding and kicking, but they could not find touch. The students fielded cleanly and ran the ball back at pace to cross the line virtually unchallenged and added the conversion.

The homesters restarted and the ball went loose, giving them a scrum. It was won, but under great pressure the kick went infield where it was taken cleanly and run back for another try and conversion.

From the restart the home team tackled the ball fielder but failed to release him on the ground, conceding a penalty which was kicked to touch. The visitors won the line-out and sent the ball wide for a further try, but with no conversion.

From the restart, FPs gained a scrum, but the clearing kick was very loose and it was run back at pace for another seven points to be conceded.

Half-time: Carnoustie 0, St. Andrews University 26.

Carnoustie restarted with the visitors knocking on. At the scrum, Kyle Burwood kicked long and although he chased hard the ball rolled into the ingoal, and was touched down.

There was more of the same until the final minutes when play was confined mainly to midfield.

Team: Burwood, Lynch, Cook, Rankin, Nicholson, Livingstone, Finlay, Dawson, C.Murray, Addison, Hall, Millar, Cowan, Hughes, Reid, Smart, Pattullo, E.Murray, Downie, Dissel.
