THE junior section of Carnoustie Rugby club held their annual tournament in the grounds of Carnoustie High School on Sunday.

The tournament consisted of three age group competitions -Micro, Primary 4/5 and Primary 6/7.

Teams from Arbroath, Blairgowrie, Brechin, Mackie, Montrose, Panmure and Strathmore were invited and all were keen to get their hands on the three trophies up for grabs.

Carnoustie managed to field two teams in the micro section.

Both played extremely well, but neither managed to reach the final.

Panmure and Strathmore were the finalists and Panmure took the silverware back to Broughty Ferry with the winning try in extra time.

In the Primary 4/5 section Carnoustie faced Strathmore, Brechin and Montrose.

The team had won the tournament the year before and was hoping to make it two in a row. They won two of their games, beating Brechin and Montrose comfortably, but lost narrowly to local rivals, Strathmore, who proceeded to the final.

Mackie were the other finalists and they came out the winners.

In the Primary 6/7 section confidence was running high in the Carnoustie team after winning the Panmure tournament the previous week.

But it soon became apparent that they were going to be pushed all the way on home turf.

The team rallied against some worthy competition, especially in a very physical game against Strathmore.

The Carnoustie players showed skill and determination to come out victorious in all five games and only conceded one try in the whole of the tournament.

They were delighted to lift the trophy in front of a cheering home crowd.

This was a great day for rugby in Carnoustie with over 200 children enjoying the game.

Carnoustie minis continue to go from strength to strength but are always looking out for new players.
