Unbeatn day for Declan and Stuart

On Sunday Abbey Bowling Club held a very successsful over and under-17 competition, in which the under-17s skipped. It has to be said that the standard of bowls from those aged between eight and 17 was excellent. Twenty-four pairs made up four sections of six playing a seven-end round-robin with section winners qualifying for the semi-finals. Those resulted in wins for Caitlin Waddilove and Hazel Sime beating Helen Ross and Maison Ross. The other semi was won by Declan Johnston and Stuart Farmer, who defeated Brechin pair Duncan Stewart and Shane Cunningham. As luck would have it just as the final began the heavens opened up and continued throughout the match leaving the finalists drenched. Worthy winners on the day were Declan and Stuart, who never lost a game.

Angus Top 10

The Maroons’ played their second round tie just before the holiday fortnight and progressed to the quarter-finals with a 6-2 victory over a very strong Craigie side. With victories in singles, pairs and triples and a last end defeat for the fours, all in all it was a decent team performance.

Canmore provide the last eight opponents but with home advantage the club will be hoping to reach the semi-finals.

Handicap Singles

Friday saw the final of the Handicap Singles with George Mathieson (Dode) taking on Davie Strachan.

With both players off scratch a close final was anticipated andearly exchanges were even enough with both players catching the green really well.

But as the game wore on it was Dode’s drawing that just seemed to be taking the tie towards him. From 13-12 he edged close to the title as he built up a 20-13 lead, but Dave never gave up and reduced the score to 20-16.

On the next end he lay three shots, but Dode, with his last bowl pulled a rabbit out the hat, and played a tremendous shot to pick up the one required to lift the title 21-16. Both players should be congratulated on what was a very good final played in a sporting manner. This was George’s first singles title.
