FORTHILL witnessed one of the finest Scottish National League innings in recent years on Saturday when Drumpellier’s Sri Lankan pro Kulatunga hit 124 from 89 balls in pursuit of Forfarshire’s Duckworth-Lewis adjusted total of 283, but the home side hit back to claim the points.

In Perth, Forthill overcame Northern by 50 runs, while Forthill XI were once again idle due to Sunday’s opponents Montrose being unable to field a team.

Forfarshire chose to bat first against Drumpellier and both Brendan Ford (40 from 35 balls) and Ryan Watson (38 from 50 balls) looked in good form as the score raced along to 82 without loss in the 14th over, but both fell to good catches in the space of five balls to change the look of the scoreboard. Matthew Parker (38 from 54 balls) and Craig Wallace took the score up to 154 for four in the 30th over before Scott Galloway and Aman Bailwal came together and accelerated the scoring rate making a total of 300 plus look possible until rain forced the abandonment of the ‘Shire innings, Scott finishing on 65 not out from 67 balls and Aman 51 not out from 52 balls in a total of 263 for four in 46 overs.

Drumpellier lost both openers early in their response, but pro Kulatunga dominated the scoring and passed 50 from 59 balls as the total reached 102 for two in 20 overs. When the next 30 balls bowled to Kulatunga saw 74 runs scored, an unlikely victory looked possible, but Ryan Watson forced a mistimed drive to be skyed and Tony Weed took an excellent high catch at mid-off to end an innings that included four consecutive 6s off Graeme Black along with 12 4s and a further eight 6s. Several more fine catches saw off the Drumps’ middle order and Forfarshire completed a 36 run victory.

Forthill started confidently against Northern at Doo’cot Park with Graeme Garden (31) and Steven Bedford (27) taking the score up towards 50 before Tim Hancock (37) and Scott Cameron (27) batted well mid-innings, allowing Dean Fearn to push the total past 200 in the closing overs with a useful 39 not out.

Four wickets from Dale Sweeney (four for 19) saw Forthill dominate the early stages of the second innings as Northern were reduced to 70 for six. Late runs from Sangster (54) and Ragu (31) bolstered the home total before being bowled out for 167, Calum Walker taking three for 46.

On Friday evening, Forfarshire progressed to the second round of the Murgitroyd National 20/20 Knock-out with an 87 run victory over Meigle at Forthill. Craig Wallace (36), Robert Cannon (35) and Brendan Ford (31) were the main contributors as the home side posted 186 for eight. Scott Galloway then took three for 6 as Meigle were dismissed for 99 in reply.
