Carnoustie West End

IT HAS been a week of highs and lows at the Kinloch Street green. The weather has forced the cancellation of several club competions, but Andy Furye braved the elements at Monifieth in the Angus Singles semi-final.

Despite having to watch as water was cleared from the green on several occasions, he kept his cool to see off Eddie Mason from Birkhill 21-14 to reach the final.

On Saturday, the club travelled to Strathmartine for a friendly fixture. The West End boys showed no mercy and ran out winners 96-66.

On Sunday the club held a fun competition for the Albert Henderson trophy. In true West End spirit there was more laughter than good bowls as new members young and old paired up with some of the older experienced players in a round robin two bowl pairs competition.

Youth prevailed with the winners, David McGill and Sylvia Lindsay, showing the necessary stamina to last out the afternoon.

Specsavers Angus Leagues

IN THE Specsavers Angus Leagues last week, Carnoustie West End played host to Angus Division One league leaders, Dudhope Bowling Club in their last game of the league.

The home side had to win by 20 shots to overtake Dudhope and retain the title. In an exciting match watched by close to 100 spectators West End went full out from the start but couldn’t get to the magic 20-shot lead, failing by two shots.

Dudhope had won the league! Or so they thought until word came through of Arbroath’s amazing result at Canmore and it was Arbroath’s title. In a seven-week series only four shots seperated the top three clubs with West End finishing third and Broughty eighth.

In Division Three Broughty Castle finished third and Carnoustie fourth.
