Master of Highland Broadsword and senior instructor Lyell Drummond visited Angus last week to give a seminor to SPADA.

Club SPADA teaches students historical European martial arts and is a remarkable amount of fun.

Drummond is the first (and only) member of the SSA to earn his position as Instructor.

He has developed his own system of SSA Highland Basket Hilted Broadsword based on his academic studies, 15 years of fencing experience and exposure to many instructors of note from home and abroad.

Lyell studied foil/epee/sabre under the Goodhalls (Angela Goodhall is one of only two women coaching in the UK to hold the ancient title of ‘Professor’, which is the highest level of coaching qualification available).

Lyell studied rapier with Andrew Feest (SSA) and now teaches his own classes in Basket Hilted Broadsword, Broadsword and Dirk, and Broadsword and Targe.

Lyell was invited to teach at SWASH by the British Federation of Historical Swordplay in Italy by (FISAS) Federazione Italiana Scherma Antica e Storica, in Spain by (AEEA) Asociacion Espanola De Escrima Antigua, and in Malta (MHFA) Historical Fencing Association.

Recently he has held workshops in Aberdeen hosted by the Aberdeen Swordmanship Group.
