Weather scuppers basement battle

On Saturday, Carnoustie Panmure were scheduled to make the trip to Volunteer Park to meet Armadale Thistle, in a basement battle, in the McBookie.com East Superleague.

When the Armadale committee lads arrived at the ground however, to make arrangements for the tie, they found that, as a result of heavy overnight rain, there were several pools of water lying on the pitch and decided that they would have to ask for a pitch inspection.

This was duly carried out before nine o’clock, and although some of it had drained away, the referee decided that the surface was just too soggy and in the interests of player safety called the match off.

Tomorrow’s Match

Tomorrow (Saturday), the Gowfers are back on home turf and this time it’s to Penicuik Athletic that they throw out the welcome mat, for a game in the McBookie.com East Superleague.

The visitors are going very well in the league at the moment and leap-frogged Linlithgow Rose last week to lie on the fourth rung, courtesy of an excellent 1-0 win over Bonnyrigg Rose.

Their record so far this season reads, played 20, won 9, drew 6 and lost 5, having scored 32 and conceded 27.

When the sides met, down at Penicuik Park, back on November 15, the homesters ran out 3-0 winners so tomorrow’s match is likely to be another tough game for the Gowfers. Action at Laing Park starts at 2.30 p.m.

Manager’s comments

Speaking ahead of tomorrow’s game against Penicuik Carnoustie boss Alan McSkimming was sanguine about the problems of junior level weather disasters.

He said: “It’s a nightmare, we do a lot of preparation during the week, a lot of arrangements are made, like babysitters, work commitments etc, and then when it’s cancelled at the last minute it’s not the best.

“It is what it is though and we just need to make sure we focus on the next task and the game ahead.

“We played Penicuik earlier in the season and were beaten 3-0 down, but actually we played 70 minutes of that with 10 men after our goalie got sent off and we gave away a penalty.

“I feel that if we had that extra man we could have got something from the game. As usual we are full of confidence and I believe we can get a victory.

“We’ve had some really superb performances lately and we need to convert that into three points.”

Missing from the roster this week are Scott Robertson, Rori Bews and goalkeeper Chris McPherson, who are all unavailable.

Alan added: “But the guys who will be coming in are more than confident and this gives them an opportunity to do well and keep these jerseys while the other boys are unavailable.”
