Good year for local pipers

CARNOUSTIE and District Pipe Band held their annual awards ceremony last week celebrating another successful year, writes Johnston Ralston.

There was a good turnout by members, families and community representatives to the presentations and annual general meeting were held in Panbride Church hall.

Pipe Major Ian Campbell highlighted the band’s successes this year which included their first time qualifying at the Scottish Championships in Dumbarton.

Another success story came when the band had two groups playing simultaneously at Carnoustie’s Tartan Day and the Twinning Celebrations in Maule, France.

Mary Bushnell of Carnoustie Gala Committee was thanked for her support.

The Pipe Major also expressed his gratitude to the many businesses which had donated prizes and sponsored trophies.

Among the business sponsors present were Colin Lansburgh and Ailsa Mackie of Spar Carnoustie, Neil Stormont of Stormont Plumbing & Heating and Gordon Leslie of Carnoustie Sports Cars.

Ian also thanked members’ families for their support.

New lead drummer Martin Brady was welcomed to his first annual general meeting and commented on recent competition performance and shared his ambitions for the drum core.

Awards were as follows:

Most Improved learner chanter player - Freya Ross. Chanter learners certificate of recognition for effort throughout the year - Ben MacDermid, Cameron Gilzean, Liam Campbell, Jade North. Most improved learner snare drummer - Josh Craigie. Most improved learner bass and tenor section - Danielle MacDermid. Most improved juvenile piper - Jordan Ednie. Most improved juvenile piper runner up - Cameron Sanger.

Most improved juvenile drummer - Khalid Bjeirmi. Most improved juvenile drummer runner up - Kathryn Brown.

Most improved piper - Mark Donnachie. Most improved piper runner up - Martin Doig. Most improved drummer - Rebecca Fullerton. Most improved drummer runner up - Adam Robertson. Most improved bass and tenor section - Kerry Roberts. Certificate for runner up bass and tenor section - Holly Ross.

Dress and deportment juvenile award- Holly Ross. Dress and deportment adult award - Iain Tasker. Special Recognition Award for service to the band- David Gibson.

Following the recent successful sponsored pipe walk there were three additional prizes. Best junior fund-raiser was Jordan Ednie; best adult fundraiser - Ian Campbell and best fancy dress - Calum ‘Jack Sparrow’ Deuchar.
