I must admit we are a bit spoiled in the Forfar office as we seem to be surrounded by quality restaurants and coffee shops.
Included in the selection is Purdy’s Coffee House in Castle Street which boasts it does not serve fast food but good food fast.
I’m a regular lunch time visitor for a takeaway but on Tuesday three of us popped in for lunch.
The best thing about Purdy’s is that everything is cooked and baked freshly on the premises - from the delicious daily soups to the mouth-watering and very tempting home baking.
The soups of the day were tomato and sweet potato. I opted for the soup/toastie combo (£4.80) with a cheese and onion toastie complementing the sweet potato soup.
The soup was full of flavour and piping hot with the toastie brimming with hot melted cheese.
Scott went for the panini deal at £5.90, again with the sweet potato soup served with a panini with the haggis, mozzarella and apple jelly filling and he wasn’t disappointed.
Quite simply it was “awesome”, with the apple jelly really working to add a little bit of sweetness to the haggis.
A tuna mayonnaise baked potato (£4.80) was Amanda’s preferred option. Served with a side salad and coleslaw, she explained the baked potato was cooked to perfection with the “skin quite crisp but the filling very fluffy.”
She said: “There was more than ample tuna and a very good tuna mayo to potato ratio. There was also some sort of seasoning on the potato which was delicious.”
On this occasion we gave the wide selection of home baking a miss, even although the staff were busy creating their latest tray bakes which never disappoint.
The menu at Purdy’s ticks all the boxes all year round and the attentive staff always ask if everything is okay with your meal - a nice touch for customer feedback.
As you would expect there is a good selection of fillings for the sandwiches, toasties, paninis or baked potatoes and some lovely surprises on the menu.
The three of us were intrigued by the ‘Kiwi breakfast’ of pancakes layered with bacon and bananas and drizzled with maple syrup - I feel a return visit coming on!
