The story of a difficult childhood

The Abbey Theatre will stage a touching tale of growing up in a Traveller community to audiences this month.

‘The White Bird Passes’ by Anne Downie tells the story of Jessie Kesson’s childhood and her struggle for survival ultimately becoming one of Scotland’s most successful writers.

Anne Downie first met Jessie Kesson in 1985 at a meeting arranged by director Andi Ross who commissioned Anne to adapt Jessie’s story for the stage.

Anne said: “I sent her both the first and the final drafts of my play and she wrote back approvingly.” The Abbey Theatre Club will present ‘The White Bird Passes By’ at the Abbey Theatre, Abbot Street, at 7.30 p.m. from Monday August 12, to Saturday, August 24. Tickets are available now by calling VisitScotland on 01241 872609.
