Brechin teens scoop silver and gold at Boxing tournament

A group of young boxers took part in a major tournament last weekend and brought a gold and silver medal back to Brechin.

It’s been some time since the town was represented in competitive boxing and Brechin Boxing Club coach Jocky McLean was delighted with the efforts of his young sportsmen.

The Angus youngsters took part in the Schools and Juniors Championships which took place at Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility in Motherwell. This tournament was the first championship after an 18-month absence due to Covid restrictions.

Taking part in the contest were Alfie Murray, Brannan Brymer, Alex Thomson, Ben Harrison who are all Brechin boys, and Eddie Hill who is from Forfar.

Reaching the tournament finals on the day were Alfie Murray who won silver and Brannan Brymer who bagged the gold medal.

Speaking after the competition, trainer Jocky McLean said:

“We had a great day at the tournament. We were so proud to have two boxers in the finals. Alfie Murray, who boxed really well and earned himself a silver medal for his own weight category.

In the last bout of the Scottish tournament Brannan Brymer earned himself a gold medal. It was a tough but great match for both fighters.”

He added: “I am so proud of Brannan and Alfie. These guys have come a long way.

They put in so much training and dedication to progress and this weekend, these guys smashed it.

We are so proud of all five of our boxers and what they have achieved."

Trainer Jocky is excited about the club’s future plans.

“There is a lot more still to come so the training will continue. Next on the agenda for our fighters - we have two shows confirmed for November and December in Inverness and Glasgow then hopefully some shows that are closer to home that will see the rest of our other fighters showcasing their skills and representing Brechin."

“In January we have the Scottish Novices which is another big competition. We then have our own boxing show in April. This will be a big event for Brechin and we can't wait to host it. I’ve spent a lot of time getting the boxers ready to enter the ring and now Brechin is back on the boxing map.”
